The law of assumption · Neville Goddard, in his own words
What is the law of assumption?
The law of assumption is Neville Goddard's teaching that an assumption you hold as true, and keep holding, becomes fact, even when your senses deny it at first. His usual wording was that “an assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact.” He called this the Law, to set it apart from what he called the Promise.
Behind it is his claim that imagining creates reality, and that nothing changes outside until something changes in imagination first.
In Neville's words
Verbatim from the restored lecture transcripts and his books. A lecture link plays only the quoted passage.
“However, the only fate governing your life is the fate determined by your own concepts, your own assumptions; for an assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact.”
“In your dreams dare to assume that you are the man that you want to be. Assume that you are and persist in that assumption. And that assumption, in a way you do not consciously know, will harden into fact. All assumptions, if persisted in, become what the world calls reality. So do not give up.”
“You assume that you are, and that assumption may be denied at the moment of the assumption, denied by your senses, denied by reason. But if you dare to persist in that assumption, it will harden into fact.”
“Define your highest ideal and concentrate your attention upon this ideal until you identify yourself with it. Assume the feeling of being it – the feeling that would be yours were you now embodying it in your world. This assumption, though now denied by your senses, "if persisted in" – will become a fact in your world.”
“When man solves the mystery of imagining, he will have discovered the secret of causation, and that is: Imagining creates reality. Therefore, the man who is aware of what he is imagining knows what he is creating; realizes more and more that the drama of life is imaginal - not physical.”
“To attempt to change circumstances before you change your imaginal activity, is to struggle against the very nature of things. There can be no outer change until there is first an imaginal change. Everything you do, unaccompanied by an imaginal change, is but futile readjustment of surfaces.”
How he describes doing it
From Five Lessons, Out of This World and The Power of Awareness, with two lectures in which he says the same thing aloud.
-
Know what you want. Then build one event that implies the wish is fulfilled, and keep it to a single act.
“Know what you want. Then construct a single event, an event which implies fulfillment of your wish. Restrict the event to a single act.”
Five Lessons 1948, ch. 2, Assumptions Harden Into Fact
-
Assume the feeling of already being what you want, then live and act from that conviction.
“Define your ideal and concentrate your attention upon the idea of identifying yourself with your ideal. Assume the feeling of being it, the feeling that would be yours were you already the embodiment of your ideal. Then live and act upon this conviction. This assumption, though denied by the senses, if persisted in, will become fact.”
Out of This World 1949, ch. 2, Assumptions Become Facts
-
Let the people close to you see you as they would if it were true, in imagination and not in words.
“Know what you want to be, be definite. When you know exactly what you want to be, don't ask anyone if it's possible. You simply feel that you are it. What would the feeling be like if it were true? Would my wife, my husband, my friends know it? Let them know it, not verbally. Let them know it all in your imagination. Let them see you as they would have to see you if it were true.”

-
Wear the feeling like new clothes until it is natural.
“So put on the feeling. It's like something new when you first put it on. And wear it. And then after a while it becomes so natural. And then it objectifies itself in your world. And you become exactly what you've assumed that you are.”

-
Persist. He said feeling yourself into the state once is not enough.
“It is not enough to feel yourself into the state of the answered prayer; you must persist in that state.”

Common questions
Why does he say “though false”?
Because when you first make the assumption, your senses deny it. In a lecture he put it this way.
“Let them see you, and go to sleep in that assumption, for I know from my own experience that an assumption, though denied by my senses and therefore called by the world false, if persisted in, will harden into fact. That I do know.”
Immortal Man lecture, at 28:08 Play 17 s
How long does it take?
He tied the time to how natural the feeling has become.
“The time it takes your assumption to become fact, your desire to be fulfilled, is directly proportionate to the naturalness of your feeling of already being what you want to be – of already having what you desire.”
The Power of Awareness 1952, ch. 24, Failure
How is the Law different from the Promise?
He taught the Law as something you use, and said the Promise comes whether or not you use it.
“You can work the law beautifully up to the extreme. That does not mean in any way you're going to earn the promise. The promise comes in spite of your use of law.”
The Law: You Are the Operant Power of the Law of Assumption lecture, at 35:10 Play 22 s
Can the law be used for selfish ends?
He said it can, and warned against it.
“It can be used for greedy, selfish purposes as well as noble ones. But it should always be borne in mind that ignoble thoughts and actions inevitably result in unhappy consequences.”

All 68 lectures on the law of assumption
A Standing Order: The Death, Burial, Resurrection of God
Running time 46:23Neville discusses the Christian mystery of death, burial, and resurrection as an internal drama occurring within the individual. He explains that the cross is the human body, the tomb is the skull, and resurrection is an actual event where one awakens within the skull and is born from above. He also describes the dream-like nature of human existence and the promise of awakening.
A Strong Imagination Begets the Event
Running time 43:52Neville uses the story of Joseph Wilson (Xerox founder) to illustrate that imagination is God. He explains that a strong imagination begets the event, and that one must assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. The lecture covers biblical references, the dreamer Joseph, and the practical application of imagining from the end.
Acts Of God
Running time 45:19Neville Goddard discusses the meaning of Jesus as the individual's own I AMness and the mighty acts of God for redemption. He shares personal experiences, explores the oral and written traditions of scripture, and explains how true spiritual events occur within each person, not as external secular history.
Andrew: 2nd Quality Disciple: Courage
Running time 44:38Neville plays the role of Andrew, the disciple who leads others to Jesus. He explains that Jesus Christ is not an external being but one's own human imagination, which is God. The lecture describes how to use imagination to assume a desired state and, through persistence, see it expressed in reality.
Awake, O Sleeper
Running time 39:37Neville Goddard explains the biblical call to awake from the dream of death, describing the fall as a deliberate plan for expansion. He discusses the nature of the body as an emanation of the soul, the unity of God and humanity, and the promise of awakening into eternal life.
Call Upon Self
Running time 46:19Neville discusses the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4) and Paul's question about calling upon God. He argues the true God is one's own human imagination, not an external deity. The lecture covers faith, the importance of "I am," and the plan of redemption through personal experience of Christ rising within.
Ends: Ultimate and Temporary
Running time 46:20Neville Goddard discusses two types of ends described in scripture: the ultimate end where God gives himself to man individually, and temporary ends that can be achieved through the law of assumption. He explains that the ultimate end comes suddenly and unpredictably, while temporary ends are reached by occupying the feeling of the wish fulfilled.
False Gods
Running time 42:57Neville Goddard argues that the Old Testament is a prophetic blueprint of the story of Jesus, not secular history. He explains that a false god, any external deity, is the only enemy. Through his own experience, he shows that when Scripture erupts within a person, all external images of God vanish and one discovers God as one's own being.
Father Forgive Them
Running time 46:23Neville explains that all events, including actions others take, are driven by unseen imaginal acts. He uses a story about a woman who imagined new possessions; they later arrived through a robbery and insurance settlement. He connects this to the first cry on the cross, "Father, forgive them," as proof that everyone acts under compulsion from imaginal causes.
Feel After Him
Running time 46:33Neville Goddard identifies God with the human imagination, citing Paul's address to the Athenians in Acts 17. He explains that imagining creates reality, and that one should feel after this indwelling God by assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled. The lecture covers the mechanics of assumption, the importance of mental diet, and the idea that all objective reality originates from what is first imagined.
Feel Chosen
Running time 43:49Neville Goddard discusses the concept that God has placed eternity into the mind of man, making each person the chosen one. He interprets scriptural passages about the word "Olam" and shares letters from listeners describing experiences of unity with the divine. He encourages feeling wanted and known by the creator.
Fulfillment of God's Promise
Running time 45:28Neville Goddard explains the biblical story of Holy Week as a symbolic pattern of God's purpose unfolding within every individual. He identifies the "I am" as Jesus, the Lord buried in humanity, and describes the awakening within the skull, the birth from above, and the appearance of David as the Son who reveals the individual as God the Father.
God Imagining Creates
Running time 43:52Neville Goddard teaches that imagining creates reality and that God and man are one. He argues that all phenomena come from human imagination, shares stories about the power of imaginal acts, and warns against misusing imagination. He advises listeners to consciously use imagination lovingly and to persist in assumptions until they become facts.
God Is Known By Experience Or Not At All
Running time 46:10Neville Goddard describes his personal experience of waking from the sleep of humanity to recognize himself as God the Father. He explains that God becomes man so that man may become God, and that this awakening occurs when the Son calls the sleeper from within the skull. The lecture details the biblical prophecy of David as the Son and the fulfillment of Scripture through personal revelation.
God's Law and His Promise
Running time 46:16Neville Goddard summarizes two key concepts: God's law and God's promise. The law is the principle that assumptions harden into fact. He explains using imagination to assume a desired state and persist until it appears. The promise is the unconditional biblical revelation that every person will eventually experience the birth of God in themselves, symbolized by David calling them Father.
God's Plan of Salvation
Running time 46:04Neville Goddard describes the biblical plan of salvation as an internal, individual awakening. He explains that God's purpose is to give himself to you, culminating in the birth of Christ within your own skull. The lecture covers the three key experiences of this awakening: being born from above, the vision of David as your son, and the descent of the Spirit.
God's Purpose
Running time 45:03Neville Goddard describes his personal revelation that God's purpose is to become man so that man may become God. He explains that God and man are permanently one in Christ, and this unity is known only through the revelation of Christ as David, who reveals the individual as God the Father.
God's Son
Running time 46:05Neville discusses the Epistle to the Hebrews, explaining that God's final revelation comes through His Son. He describes his own experience of God awakening within the skull and the appearance of David, revealing the father-son relationship as the ultimate truth of scripture.
God's Timeless Purpose
Running time 46:34Neville Goddard discusses the biblical concept of God's timeless purpose working through humanity. He explains that individuals are sons of God who emptied themselves of divine form to experience death and suffering in human form. The lecture covers the descent into generation and the eventual ascent into regeneration, using scripture and personal experience.
Have You Found Him: God in Action
Running time 46:27Neville Goddard explains that humanity's true search is not for money or power but for the son, Absalom, symbolizing God's lost son. He describes how God becomes man, suffers amnesia, and eventually awakens to find his son David, revealing the father's identity and the power of imagination as the cause of all phenomena.
He Is Dreaming Now
Running time 46:47Neville Goddard explores the biblical theme of God dreaming creation into existence, using the story of Alice through the looking glass as an analogy. He describes how God's purpose is to die and become his creation so that it may exist for itself. The lecture covers the promise of the son David as confirmation of awakening to one's true identity as the dreamer.
Heirs to the Universe
Running time 45:41Neville Goddard discusses the biblical teaching that every person is an heir to the entire universe, but remains unaware of this inheritance. He explains that humanity, symbolized as the first son in the parable of the prodigal son, must awaken to its true identity as God. Neville describes the process of awakening and the fulfillment of scripture within each individual.
His to Give, Yours to Receive
Running time 39:11Neville Goddard discusses a dream in which he encountered infinite love behind a door, granting every request. He relates this to the biblical promise that words from God do not return void. He emphasizes that resurrection and spiritual birth occur within each individual, fulfilling Scripture personally. The lecture explores how all experiences of Christ unfold within the believer.
Hope Deferred
Running time 43:00Neville Goddard explains that hope deferred makes the heart sick, while a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. He identifies God as one's own imagination, the sole creative power. The lecture describes how to assume a desired state, view the world from it, and let it ripen into reality, emphasizing that every imaginal act has an appointed hour to flower.
I Am Reality Called Imagination
Running time 46:05Neville Goddard teaches that imagination is God and the only reality. He explains that one's own human imagination is the creative power behind all phenomena. The lecture describes how to consciously use imagination by assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled, supported by a story of a woman applying this technique to help a friend.
Immortal Man
Running time 45:53Neville Goddard distinguishes between eternal spiritual states and the immortal self. He explains how to use imagination to create temporary states for oneself or others. He shares his personal experiences of being called to apostleship and the awakening of scripture within him.
Is Causation Imaginal?
Running time 52:14Neville Goddard argues that imagination is the sole cause of reality, grounding his claim in scripture. He teaches that God is one's own human imagination, and that turning from it to external gods produces suffering. A letter is shared about a man who imagined holding an insurance policy and saw it manifest through natural events. Neville urges listeners to persist in the end state.
It Is Done
Running time 47:52Neville explains the duality of man: the physical sense man and the spiritual man of imagination. Using a story about obtaining sold-out opera tickets, he illustrates how assuming a wish fulfilled causes events and people to align. He emphasizes forgiving all, as everyone plays necessary parts in fulfilling one's assumptions.
It Is Within
Running time 45:18Neville Goddard discusses the kingdom of God being within, identifying God with human imagination. He urges testing this principle by imagining scenes implying fulfilled desires. A friend's dream illustrates states of consciousness. Neville shares an experiment where imagining a debt repaid resulted in receiving the money. He concludes everything exists within imagination.
Justified States
Running time 45:20Neville Goddard explains that God's gift of the kingdom is unearned and irrevocable. He describes how infinite states of consciousness exist, and one can move between them through imagination. He discusses the law of revision, using a story about a physicist and the positron to illustrate moving backward in time, and emphasizes that all are justified by grace.
Love Endures
Running time 1:00:14Neville Goddard recounts his own experiences to demonstrate that God is love and that this love endures forever. He describes the literal fulfillment of scripture, including drinking the blood of God, and shares visions and stories illustrating that faith, hope, and love abide, with love being the greatest. He urges listeners to imitate God by loving first.
Mind and Speech
Running time 43:27Neville Goddard discusses two gifts given only to humans: mind and speech. He explains that inner speech reflects one's true nature and shapes the outer world. The lecture emphasizes observing and controlling internal conversations to change circumstances, using examples and scripture to illustrate the power of imagination and spoken word.
My Glory
Running time 45:53Neville Goddard discusses the biblical concept of glory as God's own self given to man through resurrection. He explains that Christ buried in man is the hope of glory, and that suffering precedes the revelation of one's true identity as Jesus Christ. The lecture emphasizes that scripture's drama unfolds individually, not as external history.
My Servant
Running time 36:12Neville discusses a vision of a woman compelled by an unseen force, which leads to a molten glass man forming from her head. He relates this to scripture, explaining that all are consigned to disobedience by a master until Christ is formed in them. He illustrates this law through a story of a poor Jewish boy who learned the spiritual power of assumption.
Nothing But God
Running time 41:22Neville Goddard teaches that God is one's own human imagination, and all apparent others are the self pushed out. He uses a story of a woman who tells a troubled man he is God dreaming he is Al, and describes a subsequent dream vision. He explains the 51st Psalm, the nature of sin as missing the mark, and the awakening to one's true identity as Jesus Christ.
Peter
Running time 46:20Neville Goddard discusses the states of consciousness personified in scripture as Peter and Jesus Christ. He explains that man dwells in three levels: physical, psychological, and spiritual. The lecture focuses on the psychological dwelling place, the confession of Peter, and the ultimate unity of all beings in Christ.
Power
Running time 59:20Neville Goddard discusses the nature of divine power as distinct from worldly power. He identifies this power as Christ, defined as one's own human imagination. The lecture covers repentance as a radical change of attitude, the use of imagination to achieve objectives, and the personification of creative power as a little child. He emphasizes that imagination is God and the kingdom of heaven is within.
Power and Wisdom
Running time 45:19Neville Goddard discusses Christ as the power and wisdom of God, distinguishing wisdom from knowledge. He recounts experiences of tasting divine power, including stopping motion in a vision and being drawn into a luminous body that heals by presence. He emphasizes the kingdom is a gift not earned, and describes the moment of recognizing God's son David as one's own child.
Prune The Vine
Running time 42:49Neville reinterprets a Bible passage about the stone rejected by builders becoming the cornerstone. He describes a vision from 1934 where a stone shattered and reassembled into a human form, which he recognized as himself. He identifies this stone with God and with imagination, teaching that one must prune one's own imaginal acts because imagination is the sole cause of life's phenomena.
Rearrange the Mind
Running time 41:41Neville Goddard explains the practical method of rearranging the structure of the mind through assumption. He draws on the Epistle of James and his own military experience to illustrate how assuming a desired state and persisting in that assumption leads to its externalization.
Secret of the Sperm Q&A
Running time 52:47Neville discusses the sperm as a symbol of God's creative power. He describes how imagination fertilizes states of consciousness, likening sealed rooms to eggs awaiting activation. He warns against unethical use of the law and emphasizes selective, dignified imagining. The lecture includes Q&A on playing all parts in Scripture and a revision story.
Self-Abandonment
Running time 42:08Neville explains that God, a plural being (Elohim), fragmented into many sons who voluntarily abandoned their divine identity to enter human form, a process he calls self-abandonment. He describes this as the crucifixion, a burial in humanity, with the purpose of transforming these human identities back into God, thereby expanding divine creativity.
The Greatest Blessing
Running time 48:29Neville Goddard discusses a strong imagination as the greatest blessing, illustrating how assuming another's identity can influence outcomes. He relates this to the biblical principle of God's fixed intention to form man into the image of Jesus Christ. Stories of individuals assuming 'I am Jesus Christ' and experiencing involuntary scriptural fulfillment are shared, linking the law's application on the earthly level to spiritual unfolding.
The Invisible You
Running time 45:55Neville Goddard describes the invisible body of man as imagination, which is God himself. He explains a biblical story about touching the risen Lord and becoming one with him. He shares personal experiences of spiritual union and offers practical instructions for using imagination to realize desires by becoming fully attached to the feeling of the wish fulfilled.
The Law of Identical Harvest
Running time 46:20Neville Goddard recounts a friend's story of losing her son and how she proved to herself that all things exist in the human imagination. He discusses how imagination is God, and how intensity of imagining can bring about changes in one's life, using examples of her success in business and personal matters.
The Law: You Are the Operant Power of the Law of Assumption
Running time 46:07Neville Goddard teaches that your own imagination is the God of Scripture, the sole creative power behind all phenomena. The lecture covers the distinction between the law and the promise, and includes examples of assumption in action.
The Law: Your Choice and Risk
Running time 44:55Neville Goddard discusses a principle from Matthew 18:19 about two agreeing on any request, illustrating it with a story of a woman who heard a neighbor's wish to be free of a disturbance, leading to the parents' deaths. He warns to always act in love and distinguishes between using the law for material desires and seeking spiritual fulfillment through the promise.
The Man Within Lecture 1
Running time 51:16Neville Goddard discusses the concept of Jesus Christ as the seed of God planted in man. He explains that through spiritual birth from above, man can be raised to the level of God. God becomes man so that man may become God, fulfilling the biblical purpose of becoming sons of God through union with Christ.
The Marks of Jesus
Running time 54:12Neville Goddard explains that the marks of Jesus are not physical stigmata but the inner experiences of resurrection, the discovery of the skull as a tomb, the birth of the spiritual body, the revelation of one's identity as the Father of David, the splitting of the temple veil, and the seal of the Holy Spirit as a dove. These are the eschatological events of scripture that unfold in the individual.
The Mystery of Jesus Christ
Running time 46:15Neville Goddard identifies Jesus Christ as a pattern of salvation hidden within the Old Testament. He explains that this pattern resurrects within an individual over 1,260 days, unfolding supernatural events that reveal the experiencer as God the Father. The lecture urges listeners to understand that Christ is not an external person but a divine pattern awaiting awakening within each person.
The Pattern of Scripture Is Real
Running time 38:53Neville Goddard discusses the claim that the Old Testament provides a pattern fulfilled in the individual through the experience of Jesus Christ. He distinguishes between reading scripture as a map and actually living its cubic reality. The lecture also covers the law of assumption as a practical method to change one's life while awaiting this spiritual awakening.
The Potter's House
Running time 42:35Neville Goddard interprets the biblical potter and clay as imagination and self-concept. He explains that imagination is God, the Father, and the potter who reshapes the clay of self-image. Using the story of Jeremiah and personal anecdotes, he describes how to rework spoiled concepts of oneself and others into desired forms through imaginal acts.
The Prophet Sees, Apostle Experiences Q&A
Running time 44:01Neville Goddard describes the eternal body as imagination, which is God himself. He explains that man descended into a physical body by penetrating and annexing its brain, entombing himself. The lecture covers awakening from the dream of life, the experience of resurrection from the tomb of the skull, and the role of the prophet who sees and the apostle who experiences.
The Secret of God
Running time 45:45Neville describes imagination as the creative power of God and the secret of God. He explains that man's imaginal acts become objective facts, using biblical references and examples to illustrate how assumptions persist and harden into reality through faithful dwelling in the end.
The Secret of Imagining Class Lecture
Running time 46:02Neville Goddard discusses imagination as God, the law of imagining, and the promise of awakening. He explains that imaginal acts are causal, faith is essential, and that man's own imagination is the creator of all phenomena. He also describes the resurrection and the revelation of God through the son David.
The Spirit of God
Running time 45:47Neville Goddard describes his experiments entering imagined scenes until they become fully real, identifying the spirit of God with human imagination. He shares practical applications of this law for changing circumstances, including his army discharge, and discusses the nature of reality, feeling, and the fundamental importance of the "I am" self-awareness.
The Top Stone
Running time 46:07Neville Goddard teaches that God's name is revealed in stages: as I Am, then as Father. He explains that the Bible is not secular history but sacred drama unfolding within the individual. The final revelation comes when David, personified humanity, calls you Father. A friend's vision of a pyramid of humanity linked by a chain illustrates that all are one being.
The True Exodus
Running time 45:17Neville Goddard explains that the biblical Exodus and resurrection are foreshadowings of a personal, mystical event. He teaches that the coming of the Holy Spirit causes the individual to relive Christ's story inwardly, culminating in the true liberation from bondage. The lecture also reinterprets Judas as the spirit of God who must betray the divine secret.
The True Freedom
Running time 41:39Neville Goddard discusses freedom as union with the pattern man, Jesus Christ. He contrasts worldly freedom with spiritual liberation, describing the journey from innocence through experience to freedom. Freedom is self-realization achieved when the son stands before you and you know who you are.
Truth Seen Is Not Forgotten
Running time 46:24Neville Goddard explains that Jesus Christ is not a historical person but a pattern of redemption buried in every man. He describes his own experience of this pattern unfolding within him, which fulfills scripture. He contrasts the external, kindergarten-level understanding of Christianity with the mature realization that Christ is the pattern of God awakening in man.
Turning Water Into Wine: The Three Levels of Awareness
Running time 45:00Neville discusses the Hebrew word "Olam" (eternity) placed in man's mind, equating the awareness "I am" with God. He interprets the miracle at Cana as representing three levels of awareness: objective fact, psychological meaning, and spiritual understanding. Letters from listeners illustrate the experience of becoming one with God and the need to relinquish intellectual pride for imaginal creation.
Two Adams
Running time 46:01This lecture examines the biblical story of Esau and Jacob as a symbol of the two Adams: the outer physical man and the inner spiritual man. Neville explains that the second Adam, one's own imagination, is destined to rule over the first. He describes how to sense and exercise this inner power before its full birth.
Unless I Go Away
Running time 1:00:22Neville Goddard explores the biblical theme of God departing to dwell within humanity. He interprets a vision of sunflowers and a rat as the transition from innocent, collective existence to individualized consciousness through experience. The lecture discusses the mystery of the Son, the promise to Abraham, and the power of appropriation.
What Is Man
Running time 45:30Neville Goddard explains that the entire divine drama, including the relationship between the Father and the Son, is contained within each individual. He discusses the biblical symbolism of David as the Son of God, the grafting of the tree of life, and the experience of spiritual awakening that reveals one's true identity.
Where Are You Staying? Where Do You Live Psychologically
Running time 46:20Neville Goddard explains that one's psychological dwelling place is the state of consciousness to which they most often return. He distinguishes between physical, psychological, and spiritual levels of existence, and recounts a story of a little girl who experienced a revelation of Christ. The lecture emphasizes that all individuals are moving through eternal states toward the climax of Jesus Christ.
Who Is Jesus
Running time 45:55Neville Goddard explores the identity of Jesus as the I AM within every person, drawing on scripture, his father's and brother's life stories, and his own visions. He explains that all of reality is a dream pushed out from the dreamer, and that by remaining faithful to the inner vision, one can transform their world.
Who Is Paul
Running time 45:55Neville Goddard explains that Paul is not a historical figure but the final state of consciousness in which a person experiences God directly. He describes the biblical drama as an internal pattern that unfolds within the individual, culminating in the realization that one's own imagination is God and that the son, David, reveals the Father.
Whom God Hath Afflicted
Running time 45:50Neville Goddard uses the analogy of grafting a plant bud onto a different stalk to explain what he sees as the Christian mystery of detachment from the tree of life and insertion into human nature, leading to the eventual bearing of the fruit of God the Father, symbolized by David.
