Four chapters from 1949 on thinking fourth-dimensionally: time as a dimension imagination can move through, and the drowsy state in which an assumption is planted. It bridges the early books and The Power of Awareness.
What this book is about
Out of This World is a short book in four chapters. In “Thinking Fourth-Dimensionally” Neville starts from the observation that some people, himself included, have seen events before they occurred, and he reasons that such events must exist in a larger dimension before they reach this one. He then argues that the future is flexible and describes a method: condense the wish into a single imagined act that implies its fulfilment, and re-enact it until it has the feeling of reality. “Assumptions Become Facts” describes the controlled waking dream, a state of attention without effort in which one builds an event that would follow the fulfilment of a desire. “Power Of Imagination” reads the saying that the truth shall make you free as an instruction to assume that a neighbour already is what he wishes to be. The last chapter, “No One To Change But Self”, retells a mystical experience at sea from his earlier book The Search and draws the lesson of its title: in his view there is no outer change until there is first an inner one.
Three passages
“Experience has taught me to restrict the imaginary action, to condense the idea which is to be the object of our meditation into a single act, and to re-enact it over and over again until it has the feeling of reality.”
“To know the truth of our neighbor we must assume that he is already that which he desires to be. Any concept we hold of another that is short of his fulfilled desire will not make him free and therefore cannot be the truth.”
“There can be no outer change until there is first an inner change. As within, so without.”
