Neville Goddard, in his own words

What is Neville Goddard’s most famous quote?

There is no official ranking. The line quoted most often is “an assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact.” He says it in his lectures, he wrote it in Awakened Imagination, and in The Law and the Promise he credits the sentence to Anthony Eden. Two shorter lines travel with it: “feeling is the secret”, the title of his 1944 book, and “imagining creates reality”, which he says in the lectures.

What he said

Verbatim from his books and the restored lecture transcripts, in reading order. A lecture link plays only the quoted words.

“Even though at the moment of the assumption it was denied by reason, an assumption though false, if persisted in will harden into fact.”

I Am Reality Called Imagination lecture, at 40:23 Play 8 s

“Experience has convinced me that an assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact, that continuous imagination is sufficient for all things, and all my reasonable plans and actions will never make up for my lack of continuous imagination.”

Awakened Imagination 1954, ch. 1, Who Is Your Imagination?

“After reading F.B.’s letter, we must agree with Anthony Eden that “An assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact.””

The Law and the Promise 1961, ch. 6, Visionary Fancy

“Let them see you, and go to sleep in that assumption, for I know from my own experience that an assumption, though denied by my senses and therefore called by the world false, if persisted in, will harden into fact. That I do know. An assumption of the same simple little assumption. If you will persist in it, it will harden into fact. That is a law.”

Immortal Man lecture, at 28:08 Play 27 s

“You simply assume that you have it. You dare to assume that you are in possession now of what you really want in this world. And if you dare to persist in that assumption, it will harden into fact.”

Heirs to the Universe lecture, at 14:40 Play 15 s

“Feeling is the secret of creation.”

Freedom for All 1942, ch. 4, The Law of Creation

“I catch the mood, the feeling that would be mine if I were what I want to be. I don't have to touch something. I can if I want to. But it's the mood I'm speaking of. What would the feeling be like if he were well? If she were this? And then you catch it just as though it is true.”

I Am Reality Called Imagination lecture, at 39:20 Play 23 s

“Imagining creates reality. Believe it. Because imagining is God in action. Imagination is God. Imagining is God in action.”

Is Causation Imaginal? lecture, at 30:38 Play 11 s
