A book in 27 chapters. About 2.5 hours to read.

Neville’s longest early work, from 1941. Its twenty-seven chapters read the Bible as an inner drama, with Abraham, Moses and Jesus as states of consciousness rather than figures of history, and ask what that reading means for your own assumptions. A book to take slowly.

What this book is about

Your Faith Is Your Fortune (1941) is a sequence of twenty-seven chapters built on one idea: in Neville’s telling, the awareness of being, the I AM, is God, and each person’s world is that awareness conditioned by what it believes itself to be. The opening chapters, Before Abraham Was, You Shall Decree and The Principle of Truth, set out this premise and argue that a person decrees his world through what he is conscious of being rather than through spoken words. Whom Seek Ye? warns readers away from teachers and masters who sell initiation, and Who Am I? and I Am He return the search to the reader’s own awareness. Neville then reads Bible stories as psychological dramas: the virgin birth in Christmas, the crucifixion and resurrection through the movable date of Easter, the twelve disciples as twelve qualities of mind, Daniel in the lions’ den as turning attention away from the problem. He describes prayer as a spiritual wedding, writes on the interval of time between an assumption and its appearance, and reads the Twenty Third Psalm in the first person. The book closes with Gethsemane and with Joshua at Jericho, which Neville calls a formula for victory.

Three passages

“In the beginning was the unconditioned awareness of being, and the unconditioned awareness of being became conditioned by imagining itself to be something, and the unconditioned awareness of being became that which it had imagined itself to be; so did creation begin.”

Chapter 1, Before Abraham Was

“Your consciousness or your I AM is the unlimited potential upon which impressions are made. I’m-pressions are defined states pressed upon your I AM.”

Chapter 13, The I’M-Pressions

“In its true sense prayer is God’s marriage ceremony. Just as a maid on her wedding day relinquishes the name of her family to assume the name of her husband, in like manner, one who prays must relinquish his present name or nature and assume the nature of that for which he prays.”
