Free download: PDF (59 pages, 150 KB) EPUB (43 KB)

A book in eight chapters. About 1 hour to read.

The mature statement, from 1954. It opens by asking who your imagination is, and answers that it is the creative power itself, the Christ in you. This is where revision, the practice of rewriting the day before sleep, is set out in full, alongside sealed instructions, the pruning shears and the coin of heaven.

What this book is about

Awakened Imagination begins by asking who imagination is, and Neville answers by identifying the central figure of the Gospels with human imagination. In Sealed Instructions he credits his friend Abdullah with first showing him this, and reads the forgiveness of sin as the ability to identify oneself or another with an aim. Highways of the Inner World describes two outlooks in every person, the outer man of sense and the inner man of imagination, and an inner body whose movement he treats as causal. The Pruning Shears of Revision sets out his exercise of reliving the day as one wishes it had gone. The Coin of Heaven turns to inner speech, the silent conversations he says are written all around us as happenings. It Is Within draws on Blake to argue that the outer world is a shadow of the inner one, and that imagination travels according to habit. In Creation Is Finished he recounts a waking vision in which the dining room of an inn froze when he stilled his mind, which he takes as a picture of Blake’s already made states. The short last chapter reads the birth of Christ as the awakening of imagination in man.

Three passages

“Revise the letter. Mentally rewrite it and make it conform to the news you wish you had received. Then, in imagination, read the revised letter over and over again.”

Chapter 4, The Pruning Shears Of Revision

“Alter your inner speech, and your perceptual world changes. Whenever inner speech and desire are in conflict, inner speech invariably wins.”

Chapter 5, The Coin Of Heaven

“My attention concentrated into a crystal-clear focus, and the waitress walking, walked not. And I looked through the window and the leaves falling, fell not.”

Chapter 7, Creation Is Finished
