At Your Command by Neville Goddard

A book in five chapters. About 39 minutes to read.

Neville’s first book, published in 1939. In a handful of short chapters he states the claim everything later rests on: the I AM of scripture is your own consciousness, and what you assume to be true hardens into fact. Brief and direct, it makes a natural first read.

What this book is about

At Your Command, from 1939, is kept deliberately short because, as Neville writes in the introduction, commands must be short and to the point. The first chapter identifies God with the awareness of being, the I AM of Moses, David, Isaiah and the sayings of Jesus, and asks the reader to see the Bible as a psychological drama taking place in consciousness. Prayer, in his telling, is claiming rather than begging, and the story of Mary becomes a picture of conceiving a desire and keeping it secret. The second chapter reads the opening of John as the union of a desire with consciousness, and the giants and grasshoppers of Numbers as a lesson in how one values oneself. The third turns to thanksgiving, forgiveness and a new reading of tithing, with the image of the vine and the branches: attention, he argues, is the sap that keeps the things of one’s world alive. The fourth retells the great catch of fish, Daniel in the lion’s den and the widow’s oil as stories of turning attention away from a problem and toward the state desired.

Three passages

“The awareness of being is the door through which the manifestations of life pass into the world of form.”

Chapter 2, Chapter 1

“You can no more change your environment or world by destroying things than you can your reflection by destroying the mirror. Your environment and all within it reflects that which you are in consciousness.”

Chapter 3, Chapter 2

“Consciousness is the ‘vine,’ and those qualities which you are now conscious of being are as ‘branches’ that you feed and keep alive. Just as a branch has no life except it be rooted in the vine, so likewise things have no life except you be conscious of them.”
